Air Deccan targets 100 ATRs within decade to access potential 300 airports
Leading Indian LCC Air Deccan is targeting a fleet of 100 ATRs within a decade of operations. Apart from this, the airline will add more aircraft to its growing fleet of Airbus aircraft and destinations in 2007, ramping up its existing seat capacity considerably. The airline is buoyant on the back of a resurgent market cap, whittling oil prices and further private institutional financing.
Air Deccan COO, Warwick Brady, told Express TravelWorld that Air Deccan would continue augmenting its ATR and jet aircraft fleet with ATR number touching 100 within ten years of Air Deccan's operations. This is significant as it would enhance the airline's hinterland route network, unlocking demand in tertiary cities that have airports with strips fit only for ATR-type aircraft. In the past 18 months alone, ten aircraft have been added to the airline's fleet with more on the way next year. The airline has been responsible for getting 25 secondary city airports operational for the same period.
"Technically, we could get access to over 300 airports. We have just opened the airport in Bellary. Flights from Goa to Hampi have also begun. Some of our ATR sectors have been profitable from day one," Brady said. Flights from Delhi to Allahabad to meet demand for the Ardh Kumbh Mela early next year are also on the cards.
