to do
Go trekking. The zansker river freezes in midwinter. Enrich yourself

the zangsker monastries: the gompas and stay in zanskari homes. Go on

Crossing the khardungla road, the highest motorable road in the world is a feat in itself. Visit
Paduma: home to starimmo monastery, know for its beautiful architecture.
Visit the remains of the castle of zangla. Go in search
of exciting wild life, and feel satiated by the experience. Ladakhi
cuisine is a wonderful mix of varied vegetables. Dishes such as
thupka, tsumpa or ngampe are an appetizer’s delight. Restaurants
serve a wide variety of Tibetan, Chinese, Korean and Japanese

local food joints. Markets in Leh are a shopper’s dream
as they offer exotic woolens to choose from, as well as, a wide range
of Buddhist handicrafts.
Fairs and festivals

Most of the festivals of gompas take place in winter. They take the form of dance- dramas. Lamas attired in colorful robes and wearing masks symbolize various aspects of religion. The various festivals are-hemis, dosmoche, losar.

History
Leh was finally annexed to Kashmir in mid 19th century. The kingdom was at its best in the early 17th century, under famous King Sengge Namgyal, whose rule extended across Spiti and western Tibet. |

How to get there
Jet airways and Indian airlines offer daily flights to Leh from Delhi, Chandigarh. Ladakh may be reached by Kashmir valley via Kargil. But this route remains open from June to November. J and K State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) operate daily deluxe bus services between Manali and Leh. |
