Udaipur, once known as Mewar, was a land which produced a galaxy of patriots. An ideal destination for families: make this trip to strengthen your bonds and share cherished moments in the lap of breath taking sand dunes.

Things to do

Visit the Pichola lake- a pristine site for many, Rudyard Kipling commented on it as follows: ' if a venetian owned the Pichola lake, he might say with justice- see it and die.'
Also visit the lake palace which is spanned by
ornamental bridges and attractive arches. The lake palace is fringed w ith marble piazzas enclosing luxuriant orange gardens interspersed with somber cypresses.
The shilpgram village cum exhibition center is a milestone in the true presentation of the talents of artisans. Also don't miss the gulabh bagh which is one of the most imposing gardens and perhaps the biggest. Fateh sagar is also one of Udaipur’s central lakes, and a must sight for all Udaipur visitors. Udaipur is known for its stone jewellery, handicrafts, leather craft and textiles.
City market and palace road are the places most visitors go to shop. The lake palace restaurant provides excellent meals and also serves local rajasthani cuisine- a treat for the taste buds.

Festivals-
The shilpgram crafts mela displays the handicrafts and traditional work of the native rajasthanis in various hues and styles.

History

Udaipur was founded by Rana Udai Singh, after the fall of Chittor to Akbar in 1568. Legend says Udai Singh went hunting one day and came upon a sage seated beside the Pichola Lake. The sage said the king should build his palace at the same site and then the fortunes of his family would change. And so the Maharana built a small shrine, and thence came into existence the city of Udaipur.

How to get there

Udaipur is connected by air to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Aurangabad, Mumbai and Delhi - the Dabok airport is 21 kms. from city centre. This city is also a part of the western railway network. Udaipur is connected by national highway 8., the major road way between Mumbai and Delhi.
