    Fatehpur Sikri

    Situated about 40 kms from Agra, the Fatehpur Sikri is a fine example of the blending of Hindu and Muslim architecture. Built by Emperor Akbar, this city predominantly in red sandstone is a must see if one visits Agra. The legend has it that Akbar built the city as a token of gratitude to Sheikh Salim Chishti who blessed Jodha Bai, Akbar's Hindu wife with a son. Some of the prominent buildings inside Fatehpur Sikri include the Diwan-E-Aam or the Hall for the general public. This was used for celebrations and public prayers. The Diwan-E-Khaas, which housed the Emperor's throne. Daulat Khana-E-Khaas, this was Emperor Akbar's private chamber. This was connected to various other structures including Jodha Bai's palace, Mariam's palace through a corridor. Jodha Bai's palace is the most impressive structure inside Fatehpur Sikri. Sunehra Makan, located opposite to the Diwan-E-Khaas, this was the palace of Akbar's wife, Mariam. Gold murals in Persian style adorn the palace. The Panch Mahal or the 5-tiered palace is another attraction. Buland Darwaza, the highest gate in India was erected to mark Akbar's victory over Deccan. The Dargah of Salim Chishti and the Jami Masjid are other popular structures within the Fatehpur Sikri.

    Sikandra

    Akbar's mausoleum at Sikandra is located about 10 kms from Agra. The tomb has the characteristic airy tiered pavilion that is seen in the Agra Fort and the Fatehpur Sikri as well. The construction of the tomb was started by Akbar and then later completed by his son Jehangir. The tomb itself is a beautiful amalgamation of different styles of architecture. In line with the Islamic style is the elaborate entrance, the extraordinary patterns, the latticework, Persian style calligraphy, the charbagh layout etc. The small domed canopies, tiers of airy pavilions show local influence in the architecture. It is open from sunrise to sunset.

    Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

    Situated at a distance of 25 kms from Fatehpur Sikri, this famous sanctuary is located on a marshy land. The sanctuary was originally built for the gaming pleasure of the kings of the region. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park as Bharatpur is also called is a protected national park. The sanctuary is known for its Asia rich avian variety. Every year tons of migratory birds descend on the sanctuary. The rare Siberian Cranes come to spend their winters in the warmer climate of Bharatpur. There are buses, which ply regularly between Fatehpur Sikri and Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.

    Mathura

    The birthplace of Lord Krishna, Mathura is located at a distance of 58 kms from Agra. This temple town is a revered site among Hindus.
