One of the main attractions of Goa is its Carnival

Goa has a fair share of Hindu and Christian festivities and the Goans know how to party. The Christian festivals are mostly on set dates, while the Hindu festivals follow the lunar calendar.

The most important of the Goan Hindu festival is Ganesh Chaturthi known as 'Chovoth.' Goans also celebrate Shigmo or the Goan equivalent of North India's Holi festival.

One of the biggest of all Christian festivals is the Feast of St Francis Xavier. It is celebrated in the first week of December and is held at Old Goa. There are many other feasts in Goa, including the Three Kings Feast and The Procession of Saints.

Fairs and Other Events

Carnival Season in Goa is a time of drinking, feasting and merrymaking. It happens every year just before the 40 days of Lent. Huge colorful processions are organized carrying floats, bands. The three-day non-stop extravaganza of music, fun and frolic winds down with the famous Red and Black dance at Panjim.
