Jaipur is an extremely planned city based on the Shilpa Shastra
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II built the city of Jaipur in 1727 when he shifted his base from Amber. This move was necessitated for the safety of his growing population and also to escape the water scarcity that they faced when in Amber. Thus Jaipur became the first planned city in India . Built on the principles of the Shilpa Shastra, the city was designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a renowned Hindu Priest and architect of his time.
The whole city was divided into grids. Care was taken to keep the roads wide and regular. To protect the city from enemy attacks, high walls with gates were built.
