Getting Around in Mumbai

Overall Rating  (70 Reviews)

Commuter-Friendly City

Mumbai is undoubtedly one of the best connected cities in India when it comes to commuting. The characteristic red fleet of buses popularly known as the BEST connect various parts of the city and offer a clean and an inexpensive mode of transportation. The only drawback is that they have to battle their way as well through the chaotic traffic situation. BEST also runs a few AC buses from Colaba to Andheri.

Train travel is a very popular mode of transportation. If overcrowded trains do not peeve you, then this is an option worth exploring. There are three major train lines. One of them transports passengers on the Western line from Churchgate to Andheri and Virar and the Central line which runs from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Thane, Kalyan and Nerul in Navi Mumbai. The third line called the Harbour Line runs from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Andheri, Bandra. A word of caution, try and avoid train travel during the office rush hours.

Taxi travel is another option for tourists exploring the city. The taxi drivers are fairly honest and trustworthy and would not try and hoodwink. Cool Cabs, the air-conditioned version of the regular taxis are also extremely popular. Autorickshaws are available to travel for short distances. These are only available within and beyond the suburbs of Bandra and are not allowed in the city centre.
