Wazwan or a formal Kashmiri meal comprises of many mouth-watering dishes


Kashmiri Cuisine has a lot of non-vegetarian fare. Popular meat dishes consist of mutton, lamb or fish. The food preparation also uses a lot of spices including cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, saffron etc. Rice is the staple diet of the people of Kashmir.


The popular meat dishes include the Rista or mutton balls cooked in gravy, seekh kababs, tabak maz or fried pieces of meat from the ribs, Roghan Josh - a lamb dish, which uses generous amounts of the famed Kashmiri Red chillies, Yakhni and the Ghushtaba or meat balls in thick gravy.


The popular dishes on a vegetarian menu include the Dum-Aaloo and Chaman or a fried paneer dish.


Kashmiri tea or Kahva is a common accompaniment with every meal. Kahva is black in colour and is sweet. The tea uses cinnamon and cardamom.


There are a number of restaurants in Srinagar . For authentic 36-course Kashmiri meal, you can head out to Ahdoos, Mughal Durbar or the Grand on Residency Road. There are several other popular places in Srinagar located on Boulevard, Lambert Lane and the Lal Chowk area. Ruby on Lambert Lane , Juniper in Lal Chowk are famous for their Kashmiri platter. Srinagar also offers a number of rooftop cafes, which offer tourists a chance to enjoy their favourite cuppa sitting among the idyllic environment of Srinagar . Chinese Cuisine is also popular in Srinagar . Lhasa and Nun-Kun are the popular ones to offer mouth-watering Chinese fare.


A number of bakeries line the Dalgate and the Shervani Road area. These bakeries offer a variety of food including pastries, patties and Kashmiri breads like sheermal and baqerkhani.
